A car enthusiast loves to drive. There’s nothing better than the experience of being on the road. Wether it be driving with the top down and experiencing the freedom of the wind through their hair or on the edge winding through tight windy corners at ripping speeds.
An evangelical car enthusiast simply invites others to come along for the ride. Or just smiles and gives a wave of acknowledgement as they drive by with such contentment, leaving all they pass by with an unmistakable envious desire to be like them.
A car enthusiast requires no discipline to maintain their car or clean it and look after it. In fact they enjoy the time just revisiting every little detail and bringing every blemish to light so that it can be lovingly and compassionately restored to its former glory.
A car collector on the other hand spends a whole lot of time and money working diligently to protect their investment. They never drive their car. It is stored in a sturdy rock solid garage approved by the Collector’s club. They regularly attend evaluation meetings with other collectors. And when they meet people who are not part of the Collector’s club they are always keen to share how important an investment they too can make if they just get a car, follow the same steps that they are taking and join the club.
Now with no disrespects and simply for the sake of this example let me ask a question. If God our Father is the car… who would Jesus say he knew? The enthusiast or the collector?
