My Father’s Heart

The other day I was greatly impacted by some experiences with my son. He was in the middle of doing something that I did not want him to do and yet I experienced an overwhelming love for my son. All of a sudden a cascade of revelation and scriptures falling into place occurred.

Firstly I saw that this is how my heavenly father sees me. I am his beloved son and it has nothing to do with what I have done right or wrong. Father declared Jesus his beloved son before he had done any ministry.

Secondly I realised that although I often tell my son to do or not do something, I don’t actually want him to do what I say just because he is scared of punishment or even because it’s the right thing to do. When I ask my son to eat some more salad before he has his next chip, I really just want him to be healthy. When I tell him to stop and be careful of that, I want him to be safe.

Ultimately, my desire is for my son to see the desire of my heart for him. I want him to understand the reasons why I ask him to do things. That he would want to be healthy, safe and happy. And in the end I want his heart to receive my heart for him even if the outworking is not what I expect.

And so it is with our Heavenly Father. He doesn’t want us to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. He doesn’t want us to live a good life because we are fearful of going to hell. He wants us to know that we are his beloved children and that has almost nothing to do with whether our sins are forgiven… Except that if we think that all the wrong things we’ve done separate us from God, then He wants us to know that He’s already dealt with that completely. After all, Love keeps no record of wrong and God is Love.

Although Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, it’s not the primary reason why he came to this earth. John the Baptist came preaching repent a be baptised for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus came saying repent (leave your current way of living by right and wrong,  your knowledge of good and evil) for the kingdom of heaven has come near. The primary reason he came is that his Father wants family and he wants us to enter into Sonship. That the heart of the Father would be in our heart. And we would find life knowing that we are loved and experiencing that love. That we would live from our heart, the very heart of our Heavenly Father.
